As the residents gather in the Rovers to see in the New Year, Gail struggles with her emotions, while Deirdre's attempts to reunite Tracy with Robert backfire.

Steve's financial woes have an unfortunate knock-on effect for the Grimshaws. Aidan takes advantage of Sarah's good nature and love-rat John two-times Toyah with Maria.

Richard bludgeons Maxine to death with the crowbar, taking steps to ensure the crime scene looks like that of a failed burglary. Ashley, having discovered Maxine's body, is arrested and taken in for questioning, while Richard learns that Emily is still alive.

Special double episode. Peter hears that Lucy is pregnant. Steve is jealous of Joe and his wife Karen spending so much time together. Richard wants to move away from Weatherfield with Gail and the kids.

Peter proposes to Lucy. David and Sarah are asked by Gail and Richard if they want to move away. Ashley is in denial over the paternity test.

Katy tarts herself up in the hope that she's going for a run with Martin. She's disappointed to learn that he's taking David fishing with Craig instead. Blanche has gone to look after her sick sister in Morecambe. Curly confides in Emily that his marriage is on the rocks because Emma thinks more of her job than she does of him and Ben.
