We had the opportunity to visit one of the most extreme cases of Diogenes syndrome in France. For about ten years, a 74-year-old woman—a former teacher—had been hoarding all manner of objects and refuse in her 200-square-meter home. After climbing over mountains of trash, we discovered excrement, rats, and unsanitary conditions.
